The district appears relatively new due to its recent major construction projects, but has a pretty old town center and a very long history. The name originally comes from "Kalter Bach". This is said to have suddenly gushed out of the ground in 754 when the funeral procession carrying the body of St. Boniface during his transfer from Mainz to Fulda stopped off on the nearby Riedberg. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 772, and Kalbach was incorporated exactly 1200 years later (1972).
In recent years, its Riedberg district has become Frankfurt's largest new development area. Over 6,000 apartments and houses provide a home for more than 15,000 people. Many of them work in the new "Science City". Many institutes have settled on the natural sciences campus of Goethe University, including the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics and the Frankfurt Biotechnology Innovation Center.
Nevertheless, Kalbach-Riedberg is a neighborly place. Club life is diverse, there is a large sports and leisure center and the Kalbach children's club is even known nationwide. Every year, it awards the Rattlesnake Children's Book Prize.
