The climatic health resort of Königstein with its districts of Falkenstein, Mammolshain and Schneidhain is home to almost 17,000 inhabitants today. The popular spa and residential town can look back on a long history: Königstein was granted its town charter in 1313. Even today, the town's landmark, the castle ruins, bear witness to the fortified days of the Middle Ages.
In the 19th century, Königstein became a famous health resort and the summer residence of numerous Frankfurt bourgeois families. The sovereign of the time also resided here with his wife. They remained loyal to Königstein through all the political upheavals. The town owes the "Luxembourg Castle", so called after Adolph lost his Duchy of Nassau to Prussia, but later became Grand Duke of Luxembourg through succession, to the couple.
The unique climate and proximity to Frankfurt attracted artists and intellectuals from an early age. The fresh air in a sheltered location stimulates the mind. It is therefore not surprising that Königstein has always been a popular conference venue. Important decisions were made here. In 1949, for example, the prime ministers set the course for the Basic Law here, which is why Königstein is considered the "cradle of the Federal Republic of Germany".
Numerous sights such as the two castles, the romantic old town or the castle and town museum invite you to explore. And the spa, built in 1977 according to the design of architects Rudolf and Ingeborg Geier and, together with the design by documenta artist Otto Herbert Hajek, a colorful work of art, should not be missed on a tour.
Wonderful hiking trails, including Terrainkur hiking trails with different levels of difficulty, a special heart hiking trail and the climatic health hiking trail offer the perfect combination of relaxation and enjoyment of nature. If you want to be active, you will find the best relaxation in the Königstein spa, in the outdoor pool in the Woogtal or on a bike tour.
